What Does Fat:Protein Ratio Mean on Carnivore?
On a carnivore diet, fat and protein are your only significant energy sources. The fat energy percentage tells you what fraction of your total caloric intake comes from fat. Because fat has 9 kcal/g versus protein's 4 kcal/g, a high fat percentage in energy terms does not require equal grams of fat and protein.
Most experienced carnivores target 70–80% of energy from fat. This range supports stable blood sugar, deep ketone production, and strong satiety signals without protein-induced insulin spikes.
| Fat Energy % | Zone | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| < 50% | High Protein | More muscle-building signal; less ketosis; can feel hungry faster |
| 50–70% | Moderate Fat | Transition zone; good for athletes or lean-mass goals |
| 70–80% | Optimal Carnivore | Strong satiety, stable energy, supported ketone production |
| 80–90% | Very High Fat | Therapeutic applications; some find digestion slower |
| > 90% | Extreme Fat | Rare; used in specific clinical or adaptation protocols |
